If you look up OCD in the dictionary, there I am. When it comes to change, I simply can't do just "one" thing or piece, I have to do several. I become obsessive about it ... sadly, I'm not kidding! Please tell me I'm not alone.
Case in point ... our sitting room. This is what it looked like not too long ago:
And, well, in my attempt to lighten and brighten, giving it a Pottery Barn *coastal-y* feel, here she is today! Just a tad different, right? (lol) There is a whole laundry list of things I've changed within the last few weeks! It started with me bringing in the loveseat from our great room and adding back one of our wing chairs. I then added white slipcovers to them (from Sure Fit).
The pillows on my loveseat (from PB and one covered with blue fabric) used to live in our master bedroom):
I then added a linen slipcover (also from Sure Fit) to the ottoman.
I then changed out the window treaments ... almost knocking someone over at a local fabric store to snatch the fabric up when I spotted it! This is the same lush zebra fabric that is now on the bar stools in our great room:
One of the biggest changes is that I bit the bullet and painted the bookcase! I attacked it with my new fave, BM White Dove. I lightly sanded it ... painted one coat of KILZ primer, followed by two coats of White Dove (allowing pee-lenty of time for the paint to dry in between coats):
To continue the *coastal* feeing, I added vintage nautical wallpaper to the back of the bookcase (using double-sided tape): I intentionally darked the colors in this picture so you can see the details of the paper better. (Feel free to click on pic to enlarge):
I had fun accessorizing the bookcase ... a sea fan serves as a backdrop to this clear hurricane (filled with sand, candle and shells) and a small anchor (Home Goods). Of course, I had to add one of my vintage books that, coincidentally, has wonderful shades of blue on the cover):
And, thanks to Layla at The Lettered Cottage for this fun Spring saying that I printed and added to my mirrored frame:
Because of the soft splashes of blue in the wallpaper, I thought I'd add more blue accents, so I brought this table in from my master bath. I then added leftover zebra fabric to the lampshade and painted the once gold vintage mirror BM White Dove:
Because of the soft splashes of blue in the wallpaper, I thought I'd add more blue accents, so I brought this table in from my master bath. I then added leftover zebra fabric to the lampshade and painted the once gold vintage mirror BM White Dove:
After the paint dried, I sanded random areas to expose the gold (click on pic to enlarge, if you'd like):
Brought in the trophy vase for a pop of silver (and, oops, I need to finish hot glueing the fabric to the shade):
I also brought in these prints that used to live in our master bedroom:
So, now, pretty much, our master bedroom is empty! Gee, I wonder what that means ...
Thanks so much for visiting! I'm off to decorator's rehab! As I'm sure I'll be kicked out, I'll be back soon so show you how I made the "GATHER" sign above the bookcase!

Awe Becca, I love it! I have been in a lightening and brightening mood lately (painting, stripping window treatments down, etc). I just want open, airy, and clean feeling. There is absoulutely nothing wrong with any of us who change things.
ReplyDeleteI am in desperate need of slipcovers, (so I can re-paint the sunroom) lol, and see the one you got from sure fit. Do you love it? Is it good quality, and would you order from them again? I need it for furniture that we use daily, and need something that will hold up and possibly can be washed. It gets costly paying for new upholstery when you want a change, and I have never bought slip covers. Would love an opinion.
Look for me at decorator's rehab b/c that's where I belong too! I love how you've brightened up things and reused/repurposed lots of what you already had. I've been thinking of getting one of those Sure Fit slipcovers for my loveseat in the sun room but didn't know they had ottoman slips too! I have a square leather ottoman that's in the sunroom I might have to order one!
ReplyDeleteLove the new light and bright look (but I love all you do!)
Judy
Wow, Becca, you have totally changed the whole look of this room! It definitely does look more beachy and coastal now!
ReplyDeleteBecca, you and I will be there together. What a whole new look. Love the bookcase white. Great idea using maps in the back.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a wonderful transformation, Becca. Everything looks fabulous in this room. I love the creamy zebra fabric...and the pops of blue are perfect.
ReplyDeleteYou've been a very busy girl. Love everything!
have a happy day~
OH MY GOODNESS!!! Are you kidding me? That is waaayyyy more than I anticipated from your little "teaser" yesterday! It looks absolutely beyond gorgeous and I am just wondering if you ever manage to sit down. LOL! You have definitely been busy and it is all so lovely and ready to welcome in some warmer temps! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove it my friend!
Vanessa
WOW Becca, just gorgeous! You and all the other special bog ladies can out do any day HGTV. I love your sign and how you placed and edited perfectly your accessories. I wish I had the stores you all have and my mom in Charleston. Thanks for the dreamy photos and sharing your fresh new look.....take care, Emelia. Hugs too for such a great blog.
ReplyDeleteOMG BECCA I LOVE LOVE the way this room turned out!! It looks like a page out of PB! The bookshelves look fantastic painted white it really pops in the room now and I love the other painted piece too! The mirror looks gorgeous and love the silver champainge bucket with the branches! Love the new lighter and brighter look! See you at the next meeting because I belong there with you (LOL)!! Martina
ReplyDeleteOMG, girl, I love, love, love, love, love to infinity ALL of it!!!! You are soooo not alone with that OCD problem. I've changed my master bedroom TWICE since Labor Day weekend (that includes painting and the works). Yeah, that's a little crazy for sure!!! The bathroom just got changed last year, and I'm still in the middle of that drama right now. If it wasn't for having to cover all these night events at the school, I would have been finished long ago. I've only got about two more weeks, so I'm hoping it will be soon. The way I see it is this...decorating IS our therapy, it is our REHAB, and Lordee mercy, if it wasn't for that, we'd sure enough be C-R-A-Z-Y!!!!
ReplyDeleteOk, first question ~ Do you ever sleep?
ReplyDelete#2 ~ Can you please come to my house?
Looks absolutely stunning! You've done such an amazing job with all of it. When, and IF, you have some time...could you please let me know about the process of painting the bookcase? I've read several blogs but still afraid to tackle an armoire I want changed. Also, did you hot glue the entire lamp shade cover on? So many questions, right? :-) The mirror is awesome and of course, I adore the zebra fabric.
The room looks like something a professional decorator would do. Don't go to rehab...hang your "shingle".
xo
Pat
Looks fantastic! Know how it is when you start one project in one room and before you know it...you are doing the entire house ;) The last pictures makes me think that you might want to paint the chandelier white as well...lol Just sayin'
ReplyDeleteHave a great day, fondly, Roberta
I loved the room before, I love it now too. Two totally different looks. I am always amazed at all the decorating you do. You must have a totally easy going husband. I would never get away with so much changing, although I would love it. Your new room is gorgeous, what a fun change.
ReplyDeleteBrooke
The room looks fabulous and I love what you did with the bookcase!
ReplyDeleteHi Becca, this looks awesome! Would someone please tell my husband that it is okay to paint the furniture when you tire of looking at it. I just showed him the pic of your sitting room and he just shook his head. Men! The bookcase looks fantastic. Amazing what a little bit of paint can do to something!
ReplyDeleteMarianne :)
Hi again, Did you get the wing chair slip cover from sure fit. I have one that needs a face lift and I'm debating between reupholstering it and getting a slip cover.
ReplyDeletemarianne
Wow is all I can say. This is my first visit to your blog. I saw your link at BNOTP today. This is just incredible down to every last detail.
ReplyDeleteI'm from SC too, and I am now following you. Come visit me at: http://cottageatthecrossroads.com
ReplyDeleteLuckily, we all get to benefit from your OCD. :-) I need some of your energy! Everything looks beautiful!

ReplyDeleteBecca!!!! It is beautiful!!! What a wonderful transformation!
ReplyDeleteBecca!!!! It is beautiful!!! What a fantastic transformation! If you love what you do, as you obviously do, it is not an addition, it is simply your creative side manifesting!!
ReplyDeleteBecca Becca Becca!!!! Girl you have been BUSY! I love the changes :D Everything is fabulous, the curtains, the slip covers, the mirror, the painted bookcase, and the list goes on and on. You really need to do a 101 on how to accessorize a bookcase for those who are challenged like me! I can't wait for the tute on the gather sign.... it was the first thing that my eye went to! Seriously
ReplyDeleteWonderful transformation! You've got a good thing goin' here. Lots of hard work for sure.
ReplyDeleteLinda
This is beautiful! I think change is a good thing. I'm in need of some myself. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteBecca, I just white it makes everything look s good....
ReplyDeletePattie

Becca....WOW, I love these changes...when you change girl you really change!!!! How are the sure fits...I have heard good things about them!!
ReplyDeleteWow, it was so beautiful before, and the transformation is just stunning. Love the use of the maps. The mirror is fabulous in white also. Everything looks wonderful. Thanks for joining TTT. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteBecca, I love your room transformation! Everything looks so fresh and coastal- so great! I am in the process of updating my family room and ordered the same slipcover for my wing chair. It hasn't arrived yet, and now that I see yours, I can't wait for it to get here! Are you happy with yours? I love your white-painted bookcase, too. Thanks- your newest follower- Yvonne
ReplyDeleteOh Becca I know what you mean. When I get an idea in my head I just want to keep going with but most times what puts a reality check on my head is wallet. The wallet officially tells when I have to stop and perhaps wait for the next paycheck! I love the open and airy look, it reminds me of the beach!
ReplyDeleteBecca, Your lightening and brightening paid off big time. It's so much cleaner a look. Really love your fabric- was that you that nearly knocked me over?! I get wild hairs and end up transforming everything, too. Thank goodness I'm in the biz, because new furniture an accessories are expensive when paying retail! Even still, I like to shop yard and estate sales for castoffs people don't appreciate. So, are you gearing up for the bedroom now?
ReplyDelete~ Sue
Hi Becca, I love the new look! Your white slipcovers look fabulous, and the bookcase looks great painted.
ReplyDeleteKathy
It‘s so nice that I found your blog about your link on 'My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia'. So I’ve scrolled a little and like what I see. Now I’m your new follower! ;)

ReplyDeleteLove the changes, Becca. I am trying to move toward those colors, myself - so soothing! BTW, that's great about all the French speakers/teachers in your family! Fantastique! Oh, I have the same gold rimmed goblets that you showed in your first pic, and I have used BM Dove White on all the trim in my house - great color. Also, I have been following your blog for a while, thanks for becoming a follower. Linda
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing after the transformation. I love the painted cab most of all. Inspired that you did the map wallpaper on the back...
ReplyDeleteHi Becca! Oh, I love your changes! You've been one busy little gal and it paid off! I loved it before but now it looks so totally different. I like that you put the mapped paper at the backs of your hutch! I love that! Pretty and fresh and light and now I'm tired thinking of all you've done. :)
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Hey Becca,
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing the effect that a lick of paint can have? Obviously, there's quite a lot more than just a lick of new paint!!! It's looking lovely. I really like the way you feel so free to switch everything around. It must keep your house so exciting!
Sarahx
Hi Becca, I'm sooo glad you stopped by to visit since it lead me back to your blog! I've been looking around through this and your previous posts, and I'm really lovin all the changes you made in your beautiful home.

ReplyDeleteWOW It is gorgeous and has so many personal touches everywhere! The bookcase is beautiful white and well everything else is equally beautiful. xoxo
ReplyDeleteBecca, it's just beautiful. I love the slipcovers and that whole "coastally" look -- so fresh. I do so understand that "OCD" thing, & I've been told by The Man that he thought about looking into a 12-step program for me. Huh!!! He doesn't even know how bad it's going to be when he puts me into a new house! So, when are you redoing the master bedroom? LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteCAS

ReplyDeleteI too love change and I am forever moving things around but I am knocked over at your ability to paint and transform things!
