Dining Room, Take 2 ...

Happy Wednesday ... we're halfway through the week!  It's getting quite chilly here and, unfortunately, 'tis the season for getting sick.  My poor kiddo has strep.  Not to worry though ... a little bit of Keflex and a lot of TLC, and he'll be good as new!
Well, I've slowly been attempting to transform our dining room from dark and cozy to light and somewhat shabby chic (I think)!  This lighten and brighten kick I'm on has attacked almost every room in our poor house!

BEFORE: The walls were painted RL Metallic Paint/Lush Brown ... area rug in red/black and traditional hutch buffet:

NOW:  Yes, this is the same room, I promise!  (Please go easy on me.)  The walls are now BM Manchester Tan ... smaller sisal rug ... hutch buffet replaced by antique sideboard and one *ha-uge* mirror, and I slipcovered the side chairs in cotton duck slipcovers:

BEFORE:  Window treatments done in gold and red that just seemed to get lost against the dark wall color:

NOW: A new "mis-treatment" done in a gold satin *swirly* material.  I raised the height of the panels to compliment the high ceilings and added a few tassels for fun.

This bench used to sit at the foot of our bed.  I placed it in the window and added a fun grain sack pillow from Tuesday Morning:

On the other side of the room, I decided to make my first attempt at a plate collection.  And, of course, I had to steal PB's idea of adding the twine and pictures:

I found this beautiful sideboard and mirror at my favorite antique store.  I *really* want to paint the sideboard cream and glaze it, leaving the top its natural color.  Okay, all of you painting experts ... whaddaya think?  Paint it or leave it?

Love the detailed edges on the mirror:

The tea service was also purchased from the same antique store:

I found the floating shelves flanking the mirror/sideboard at Lowes and asked our friend to add small, simple molding to them to dress them up *just* a tad:  And, while I love the clean look of them, I may end up adding small corbels underneath as I'm just *waiting* for the shelves to all to come crashing down!

I also found the *perty* silver vase and candlesticks as well and love it on the table, mixed with the burlap runner:

I'm not done in here yet (imagine that), as I'd love to replace my existing chairs (which are on their last legs ... no pun intended, lol) with french country chairs, along with adding crystal magnetized charms and beaded chain to our chandie.  So, stay tuned ...

I'm off to join some fun parties!  Come on over and visit these wonderful blogs as there are so many inspiring and creative sights to see:

  1. I really love it. I am not a 'shabby' girl but I do love the look. It does not look like the same dining room. I love the mirror and my two cents is not to paint the sideboard right now. Live with it like that. I love the sideboard like it is. Beautiful room!

  2. What a beautiful dining room. I love the mirror. Stunning! I think the sideboard should stay as is. I love the contrast of the color against the wall.

  4. Becca, I love what you have done in there. Love the wall color and the shelves and that hauge mirror! I like the sideboard as is against the creamy walls. If you had darker walls I would say paint it. That is a beautiful piece. I love it. Is that runner from PB. I had one in my hand last week. It was on sale cheap, but I put it back.

  6. Wow! Is that really the same room? I can't believe it! What a transformation! I love your big mirror where it is, now I am so missing mine front and centered. LOL! Our Tuesday morning sure dosen't have those pillows! This room looks wonderful, you have done an excellent job!

  10. Becca!!! Oh my goodness girl I totally don't believe that is the same room! You did such an awesome job and just took it in a completely different direction while still maintaining an elegance and just that little bit of formality that a gracious dining room deserves! The buffet is EXACTLY what I have been looking for and have not found out yet so I am totally jealous my friend! If it were me, I wouldn't paint it but that is just my opinion. I'm so sorry your little guy has been sick...mine had strep throat last year so I feel your pain! Thanks for being so inspiring as always! :-)

  12. Beautiful! Love the mirror ~ The room looks completely different. Definitely add the bling to the chandy! :-) I think the buffet would look great painted and glazed. The glaze would enhance it and add to the room.

When you get through, you're more than welcome to come here.

  15. Holy smack-er-al!!!!! Woman!!!!! You are amazing!!! That is absolutely stunning! I know how much I loved all the warm dark colors, but this light clean look is still so warm feeling and elegant. Yowzer!!! I love it!!! I have always loved darker walls or even just a color, but I am going very neutral in this house and I love that Manchester Tan! Girl... you have outdone yourself!

  19. Be still my heart. This is stunning! The before and after both look like magazine homes. Everything is perfect-- I love the floating shelves, the mirror is the perfect (unexpected) scale, your plates with twine (better than PB). I'd also vote "no" on painting your sideboard, not because it's antique, but the dark color adds a nice contrast and grounding to the room. Is there a grade higher than A+?

  20. Beautiful make-over....love the sideboard and I would paint it like you said. Be sure and leave the top as is..I did a serving table like that, it gives it such character!!

  21. Becca, I like the new, clean look- Lightening things up made the room look larger and more open. "Borrowing" the plate idea is nothing to be ashamed of- it looks really cute! Keep the sideboard in its natural state, too. I have the smaller version of the "grainsack" pillow. What a bargain. :-)

  31. Becca- I LOVE the makeover in your dining room!! Absolutely love it!! Though the dark walls were very pretty- I am loving the lighter look- the slipcovers, the mirror, the shelving on the sides- gorgeous! I say the sideboard looks gorgeous the way it is- but if you really want to paint it- I think it would be beautiful that way also- so either way I think its a fantastic find! :) not much help I guess!! 38. You have a great sense of style. I love the new look. I vote to NOT paint the sideboard. I think it will end up looking too "contrived." Now it is a more "gathered over time" look.

  39. That looks fabulous! I love all the details you put in it..table setting, paint color, slip covered chairs, rug...everything! I wouldn't touch that sideboard. It's gorgeous and looks perfect as it is...it might get lost if you paint the bottom.IMHO. Great eye! Jen

  40. Please do not paint the sideboard or change the hardware. It is beautiful as it is. I think paint should be for wood pieces that are not in good shape. That sideboard is beautiful as it is.

  41. Hi. Visiting from Saturday Night. I love the traditional, but love what you've done with it. The sideboard is waaay too beautiful to paint. If it was damaged and shabby; I'd say paint it; but that piece is gorgeous as is. Love the plates with the pics. PB is so creative. How about a vintage chandelier with crystals?
    You've done a great job.

Ohhh...and those gorgeous drapes and the way you hung them are frenchy fabulous!!! Okay...that antique buffet is just "out of this world" gorgeous!!! I think I'm in love!!! Love all of your pretty plates on both sides of the mirror! Ahhh...white plates on the wall...frenchy fabulous!!! 55. I love what you've done with your room! I especially love the new wall color, the chair covers & the plate collection with the pictures & twine. And who knew that Tuesday morning has grain sack pillows?!? I am a big fan of painted furniture, and I'll tell you what I tell everyone who asks me... you can always remove the paint if you change your mind later. Yes, it is a pain, but no bigger pain than stripping old, built-up finish (and decades of furniture polish)! You really just can't mess it up, so have fun with it!
