Do You Suffer from DJS ...

otherwise known as "Decorating Justification Sydrome" ??  Well, I do (another self-prescribed condition).  Symptoms include: diverting from your list as you venture into noted danger zones such as HomeGoods, Pottery Barn, Hobby Lobby, Kirkland's, etc.; often using shameful mental tactics (e.g., saying, "it's the only one left" ... "it was meant to be" ... "you'll be so mad with yourself if you don't get it now" ...); and, developing a glazed over stare in the middle of the aisle as you picture how said unexpected items would look in your space.

Case in point ... on a recent trip to HomeGoods, to purchase a simple item on my list, which was ONE $3.99 white plate (to replace one I broke), I spotted a beautiful $13.99 coral throw.  And, that's when the voice of DJS kicked in ... telling myself that since I added coral to the neighboring dining room, I really NEED to add coral to the sitting room for balance ... that if I don't, I'd really regret it ... it was the ONLY one left ... that's it's such a great price ... and, bad things will happen if I don't get it!  That's when my now-clammy hands quickly placed it in my squeaky-wheeled cart.

Of course, then, I had to find a couple more coral items to add to the sitting room to add balance in there, right?  DJS forced my hand to purchase this lil' cutie ($4.99):

And, this lush lovely ($14.99):

The drive home after a DJS attack can be mixed with feelings of jubulation, as well as guilt because you caved.  However, when you get your new UNexpected and UNnecessary "pretties" home, your DJS reassures you how lovely it all looks ... and that the rapid heart rate, self-argument and moment of weakness was all worth it!

And, okay, while we're in here, I might as well share two more recent DJS purchases.  This lovely wooden bowl from Target (purchased because the sky was blue that day):

And, this beautiful blinged up tray (purchased because I reminded myself of the ancient non-existent DJS Chinese proverb, which says, "she who buy white bling bling tray and place on ottoman in sitting room have years of good luck!"):

Just please don't ask to see the white plate ... the ONLY item on my list because, well, I forgot to buy it (yet aNOTHER symptom of DJS).  Gee, I guess this means that I'll have go back (insert *sheepishly wicked grin*).  Better yet ... I think I'll just stay away for awhile and enjoy my new DJS purchases!

Thanks for stopping by ... and, if you want to go ahead and confess that you also suffer from DJS, you'll feel a lot better ... that, and you'll make ME feel a lot better, knowing that I'm not alone!  LOL

I love me some Homegoods too. We just got one here a month ago (when I say here I actually mean 45 minutes away). I actually started saving for my shopping trip...a girl's gotta do what a girls gotta do!

  7. Alright I confess...I have the same symtoms! My bff, who is usually with me at the time, always says "Buy it, you can always return it." Wish we had a Homegoods around here but I do have TJMaxx and Marshall's for my fix! Love the coral color and you were right about buying them!!!

  9. I'm terrible for DJS as well. Although, look how well it worked out for you! Perhaps we should embrace DJS, rather than be afraid of it =) Love your wooden bowl also. I've been on the hunt for one myself.

  13. Becca, you know I ALWAYS look forward to your posts. I am so glad I didn't have to wait until Tuesday (that's when I usually visit your blog). 15. Omg I was just telling my sister this exact thing this morning. I think I have ADD I can never stay on task. A butterfly can go by and I'm thinkin wow I really need to find some botanicals.... just goes and goes. Maybe someday I'll get one room completed.

  16. I'm sorry, Becca, but I guess I am still in denial! : ) Last time I was in TJ Maxx I gave myself a real tongue lashing because I was there to get Father's Day gifts and came out of trance-like state halfway to the home section, turned myself around and forced myself to get those gifts first! Who cares if I bought a small and my hubby wears a large ~ I got the stupid shirt, and moved on to the back.

I hate to be an enabler, but I really think you need to go back and get that plate. Just make sure you get that first, then go browsing!

  17. Becca,
You are just too funny! Don't worry - I suffer from that too and I hate it when I wait to buy something and then it is GONE! So much better just to buy it when you see it because at least you can take it back if it doesn't work! Your throw looks perfect in the room and that bowl really is a great piece!

  18. Too funny! I also suffer from DJS. We don't have a homegoods near us, but I went to one in Charlotte and LOVED it. We will be in Texas in a few days and dare I say it I will be hitting up Homegoods!
I love your coral finds, they look great in your space.

and since I'll be on vacation soon, Have a happy 4th!

  20. "Hello...my name is Vanessa...and I suffer from DJS too". :-) Becca you are sooo funny girl! I seriously cracked up over your Chinese proverb but I have to tell you that in this case DJS really helped you out because those are some great additions to your room. I love how the coral just pops! Do you think there is some kind of medication for this syndrome? Maybe a glass of wine? LOL!

  22. Hi, my name is Pat and I suffer from DJS too! :-)

I cannot go to Target and come out without a jillion things it seems. The only half cure I've found is just to stay away until I've saved enough $$$ to justify the trip. Perhaps I should create some chinese proverbs in advance???

LOVE the touches of coral and of course, you must have balance! I would so hate for the "Decorators Police" to stop by if you didn't!

Now, the blinged out tray is something I'd kill for....almost.

  24. Oh yes I know that have had it for a long time. I think it's really a chronic condition now. I went to Home Goods Saturday with a $25.00 gift certificate that was burning a whole in my pocket. You know that I exceeded that $25.00 in a matter of minutes. Forget about dishes I get in way to much trouble there...

  25. Hi becca,
I have a bad case of DJS too...so glad they have finally come up with a name for the disorder. Now...what is the cure?
Love your Home Goods finds, especially to coral color.
    Great post,

  32. You are so flipping funny! I just feel guilt. I shouldn't, but I do. Your color is awesome and you know exactly where to put it to make it look perfect and not overdone! You rock!

  33. Ok, seriously Becca, it hurts to spray coffee out your nose while pig-laughing. You know... pig-laughing: that snuffling, spluttering, wet sounding snort that pigs make when they're rolling around in the mud.

Yeah, that's exactly what I sounded like while I was reading your post.

The moment I was done I immediately became a follower ^_^ For Xmas this year I'm making all my female family members throw pillows with your proverb on it. (By the way, are you SURE that saying isn't real? I'm almost positive I've read it in some ancient Buddhist manuscript somewhere...)

  36. Thank you Dr. Becca for finding out what ails me! But please don't worry about finding a cure, as I really don't mind living the rest of life with DJS. ha ha

I love the fresh look of the coral! Such a fun color. I think I might ask my kiddos if they would like to use it in their teen lounge. Which by the way, they ask me every day when I am going to start working on it.... I've been sidetracked in the foyer. oops.

  37. Hilarious post!! I definitely suffer from DJS. I guess we'll just have to 'suffer' through it together. LOL

  39. Becca, thanks for the comic relief. DJS is a serious condition and I also suffer from it - if this is suffering give me more. Your room looks great I love changing up accent colors. Hey just remember we are doing our part to keep the economy moving in the right direction. Thank goodness for DJS!!!

  42. I might be known to proclaim to The Mr. that "I'm doing returns today" or "I returned $XXX worth of stuff today" when in reality I purchased more than I returned. Oops. HomeGoods and Target must spray us with some kind of spending juice when we walk in.

  43. My husband has been trying to cure me of DJS for many years. It is so difficult for him to watch me suffer (wink, wink!) I loved this! And the items you found? Just lovely!!! The coral...wonderful! Christie at Three Pixie Lane
